5. Don't Starve
I was drawing up a list of my five favorite games to come out this year the other day while trying to gauge what exactly had come out this year and keep it for any inevitable 'game of the year' list in the future. There has been trail blazing games like Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us, as well as solid franchise games like Tomb Raider and of course some indie gems like The Swapper and Reus. All that considered, Don't Starve would still probably be fairly high up on my list. Don't Starve shows just how far a rich gameplay and inspired aesthetic can go when crafted in just the right ways. It is a standard survival game that gives you few hints and no guide book, demanding you live through a randomly generated world. Monsters, darkness, your sanity and of course, your stomach will all try to kill you if you don't quickly build a sustainable environment for yourself, and even then any small error may kill you and destroy everything you were working towards. It is a brutal game but also one of the most addictive and visually striking games to hit the market this year. A port is set to be released on the PlayStation 4 and a console port could suit the game just fine. If Klei Entertainment can find a way to make item management easy on a controller, it is a game that you should definitely plan on buying. That is if you don't already have it on your computer. Which you should. Because it is great.
