7 Reasons Why You Should Be Worried About The Nintendo Switch
4. Zelda Will Be Good, But Not Ocarina-Of-Time-good
There’s a problem with centring your entire launch on Zelda: As a series, it’s never succeeded in pulling off a second Ocarina of Time.
The games are enjoyable, sure, but they haven’t aroused a swirling mass of excitement since the Ocarina/Majora 3D combo slapped us silly at the turn of the century. That glow you felt when you first stepped out into Hyrule Field, music fluttering in your ears (you know you can still hum it). The glare of the moon in Majora’s Mask - close your eyes, you’ll see it. No-one shares stories about their Skyward Sword adventure, but as soon as you mention the world of Saria and that talking Deku tree, even your mother has her tales.
Those first-class experiences were followed by games that failed to similarly capture our imaginations, no matter how well-made they are. And let’s just skip right over Hyrule Warriors.
Breath of the Wild might capture the spirit of the Zelda games we think of when we think of ‘Zelda’ – A Link to the Past, Ocarina, you know the drill. But the hype it’s getting feels dangerously close to that of Twilight Princess, which crashed with no survivors. And if Zelda fails to ignite player passion, the Switch's reputation takes all that collateral damage.
