7 Things Japan Needs To Do For Relevance In This Video Game Generation

5. Get Better Development Processes

Game Dev Process One long-time problem for Japanese gaming over the last generation has been the huge tech gap between Japanese games and western games. The lack of standardized game engines in particular has only recently been dealt with by Square Enix's Luminous and Kojima Production's Fox engines; in the past, many Japanese developers would create engines for individual games from scratch or reuse lackluster engines that lagged behind just about everything made in the west. But the engines are a symptom of a bigger problem with Japanese development. For the most part, Japanese developers don't seem to play test their games, which leads to a lot of problems with the audience's perception of the gameplay and subject matter. Western developers use play testing to figure out what does and doesn't work in the gameplay and story presentation, something Japan definitely could use to help fight the negative perceptions of their games. Better team organization, the elimination of what is essentially near permanent crunch time, and better decision making on games should help Japanese developers catch up to their western counterparts.
