7 Times Video Game Companions Were Better Than Real Friends
6. Auron - Final Fantasy X
In the first Final Fantasy to feature voice acting, Square Enix fills your party with almost exclusively colourful, bubbly characters. Despite being chased by a love-crazed spirit zombie whilst you try to stop the soul of a dead (but not really) sorcerer that wants to use your father’s soul - manifested as a huge sea monster - to destroy to world, the whole travelling troupe seem, well, cheerful.
In a darkening and dangerous world, your companions have an almost childish approach to the whole quest, treating it mostly as a bit of fun.
It’s only at the end of Yuna’s pilgrimage in the now decrepit city of Zanarkand when you learn Yuna will have to sacrifice her life, that the tone takes a turn for the sombre. This is when Auron stands above the rest. He’s the rock that the rest of the party lean on. Sure, he has the added advantage that he’s gone through it all once before with Daddy Tidus and Daddy Yuna, but he’s the voice of calm and authority when a game of blitzball just won’t cut it.
Not only does he hop between the real world and the imaginary one by riding a giant demon whale, but does it whilst wielding that sword like a Warhammer. Oh, and he's also defeated said giant demon whale in battle. Twice.
