7 Video Game Character Redesigns That Directly Insulted The Fans

5. Spyro - Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure

It’s a cynical world of dark and gritty reboots, and nothing and no-one is safe. Sometimes it feels like developers are just redesigning stuff for the sake of it. Spyro for example. He used to be a charming and cute dragon who could breathe fire and communicated primarily through headbutting. But not Skylander’s Spyro, released in 2011.

Is it too much to be cute, goddamit? I like my badass stuff badass and my cute stuff cute. I don’t want to see Kratos with huge anime eyes and and pom-poms, and I don’t want to see a war-torn Pikachu with a missing arm, cigar and a Desert Eagle 50 tucked into his ripped jeans.

Developers redesigning classics for no reason other than generating internet buzz is a slap in the face to fans of the old franchise.

It’s a reminder that companies view their characters as expendable and reworkable cogs in the great profit grinding machine. Spyro has to have a quote-unquote edgy look to him apparently. On the upside, first looks at the upcoming remakes of Spyro seem to indicate an updated design that captures the feel of the original. Where was this Spyro seven years ago, Activision?
