7 Video Game Heroes Who Broke Their "No Killing" Rule
4. Superman - Injustice: Gods Among Us
One that doesn't require a deeper read into existing lore or a flip on what went down, because the tale of Injustice's version of Superman is insanely dark. And when it comes to Kal-El's depiction in game form, NetherRealm's take on the character pushed him to the limit.
Whilst the sequel would delve more into the ramifications of saving Superman from wrongly believing the best way to protect the world is to suffocate it into cowering in fear, the original Injustice: Gods Among Us has Joker get the last laugh.
Centred on first having Kal-El realise he's going to be a father - and in the prequel comic, him spending a good few panels being elated about it - Joker kidnaps the pregnant Lois Lane, and rigs her heartbeat as the trigger to a nuclear bomb in Metropolis.
The macabre swerve comes from the Clown Prince intoxicating Superman with a Kryptonite mist, which makes him see Doomsday right in front of him - to which he sets about attacking the beast, and launching it into space.
The twist? Doomsday isn't real, and is in fact Supes' pregnant wife... who dies right in front of him, as a result of his actions.
This then crosses over with the game, as Joker gets taken into custody, but following Superman interrogating Joker as to the reason behind such a heinous attack, the only thing he gets in return is more insults.
Joker asks if Superman "will love again", to which Batman looks on in horror, as Superman runs his fist directly through the Clown Prince's stomach, killing him and becoming the runaway dictator that dominates the rest of this alternate history's arc.
Genius.
