7 Video Games That Fixed Massive Plot Holes
4. What Happened To The Soul Stone? - Diablo 2: Resurrected
Now if you were young enough to remember the ending to Diablo 1, then just uttering it's name will likely recall moments of pure "WTF" when it came to the closing moments, as here, after all your questing, you sat back and watched your hero slam the very soulstone that contained Diablo into his !*$% skull.
Ok, back up a second. WHAT?
Yeah, it was a bit weird, but thanks to an explanation on the subject by the devs, it was done by the hero (canonically The Warrior) in order to buy what little time of peace he could by pitting Diablo against his own mortal soul.
If he'd just left the soulstone there, another could have claimed it for evil, or worse the power of Diablo might have been strong enough to call another to become its vessal. However, there was still rather a massive plot hole created by the Soulstone when it came to the almighty sequel Diablo 2.
Now the reason this caused so much confusion is because in the original Diablo 2's cinematics, we'd see The Warrior lose control in his battle with Diablo and start to morph into the Lord Of Terror, but there was a massive gaping hole where the Soulstone should have been. This, coupled with a trailer that was packaged with certain copies of Starcraft, seemed to suggest that the Warrior had removed and cast away the Soulstone but was somehow still inhabited by Diablos malevolent presence, yet when players came to face Diablo again, he was rocking that stone like a horn so where the hell did it come from?
Were the cinematics non-cannon? was there an error or mistake in the renders? Well, it turns out that the stone was meant to be shown in The Warriors head in the opening moments, but for some reason wasn't included, something which the recent Diablo 2: Resurrected looked to fix. Here in the updated cinematics, we can see the Soulstone forcing its way through the skull of the former hero as he finally loses control.
It's a small touch by Vicarious Visions but one that truly helped put both a plot hole to rest, and players of the original in the mood to do some more slaying in the name of Justice.
