8 Awesome Twists That Saved Terrible Video Games

7. Konrad Isn't Real - Spec Ops: The Line

Yager Development

With military shooters being a dime a dozen, Spec Ops: The Line failed to stand out. There was nothing particularly awful about this serviceable game but it didn't to have a distinct hook to differentiate it from the competition.

If you ask anyone who played Spec Ops, they'll struggle to remember anything about this Heart of Darkness-inspired shooter... except for the last act.

Your character, a Delta Operative called Walker, heads into war-torn Dubai with his squad to search for survivors. The mission is put in jeopardy when American soldiers go rogue, under the orders of Walker's former commander, Konrad.

Walker does everything in his power to end Konrad's tyranny, even putting civilians and his own men in danger. When he finally confronts the man who trained him, Walker discovers Konrad is a corpse. In that moment, Walker realises he had been hallucinating the ex-leader's voice in his ear to help him deal with his own demons and failings.

Even though not all gamers were won over by this eye-opener, it's definitely the most memorable part of an otherwise underwhelming shooter.
