As an S unit, android 9S is incredibly skilled in hacking and gaining information on the robot armies of the earth. This came at a cost as their skills were so advanced, it threatened creator YorHa's own security to the point they feared the S units would dig too deep and learn about the android's pointless existence and the fictional war they'd concocted to keep them from revolting. To counteract this, each S unit is paired with an undercover executioner unit android that would immediately execute the S unit once they learned of YorHa's secret. For 9S, that execution android was 2B.

It's a huge twist that comes after hours falling in love with 2B, 9S and their improving relationship. Learning 2B was merely a cover for the unit's real designation is just the start though, and the reveal runs much deeper.

It turns out 2B has killed 9S a total of 48 times and while the first few seemed business as usual, she eventually grew attached. As a result, this caused 2B a lot of trauma having to kill her friend over and over again. She hated it, in fact. During routes A, B, and C, the player doesn't exactly know the reason why 2B reacts the way she does when 9S asks to be killed after being infected with a virus.

Once the reasoning is later revealed at the end of route C, we learn 2B has destroyed several versions of her friend to the point it's difficult to even believe some part of the original 9S still exists.

Brutal.
