8 Best Video Game Endings You Can't Get On A First Playthrough
5. SOL System Overload - Breath Of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Ok so. I'm not going to lie to you, researching the methods to unlock all of the hidden scenes and extra content in Breath Of Fire: Dragon Quarter might have been the most confusing thing I've ever had to do across my tenure at this company, as even now as I sit here typing this, I'm not entirely sure what the hell the devs were thinking with this SOL Mechanic.
On paper the Scenario Overlay idea seems like a sound one, allowing the player to revisit certain areas and, if they have a certain ranking (known in the game as a D-Ranking) which the game determines through the level, speed of completion and about a million other tiny details, allows them to see extra content and alternate dialogue which fleshes out plot points.
The problem is however that the game doesn't make these rankings apparent and also that there's no way to get a high enough ranking in order to see all these extra moments the first time around. Hell, you'll need to be on your third playthrough at least in order to see the final ending moment which centres around Ryu's self-sacrifice to the Dragons power in order to save his friend, and trust me while it's a touching moment the sheer amount of effort to get here is quite frankly insane.
