8 Best Video Game Sequels (That Weren't Actually Sequels)
1. The Witness - Myst & Riven
The Witness is such a beautiful bastard of a game.
A beautiful bastard that pats you on the back with one hand for solving a rather tricky puzzle, then pushes you off a cliff into the nether with the other while yelling "Have fun trying to figure this out, mate!"
The combination of massive open-world devoid of direction and puzzles so hard they could even beat up that kid at school's dad made for an experience quite unlike anything many gamers had experienced thus far.
However for golden oldies, this feeling would actually be reminiscent of the video game Myst, and more so its sequel Riven, as both game centre around exploration, puzzle-solving and rather mystical elements.
While The Witness would take an absolute deep dive into insanity with its multiple endings, some of which don't just break the fourth wall but utterly shatter it into pieces and grind the wall dust into your eyes, Riven and Myst were no stranger to the ...well strange.
In these games, you'd encounter time travel, magic, fathers and sons trapped in books all wanting to kill the other, all of which was stitched together with rich and rewarding puzzle-centric gameplay.
Honestly if you've finished The Witness and still have that itch, go back and play Myst and Riven.
You won't be disappointed.
