8 Best Video Game Sequels (That Weren't Actually Sequels)
2. Resident Evil - Sweet Home
Despite many seeing the original Resident Evil as the grandfather of the survival horror genre, it turns out that Arklay Mansion might well have been built on the foundations of several other games.
Many noted that the tank-like controls were reminiscent of later Alone in the Dark titles, and the setting of a gothic mansion with Lovecraftian vibes sure did seem to be on the table when Resident Evil was being created.
However, the game in which Resident Evil is the spiritual successor to, according to Capcom at least, is a Famicom title known as Sweet Home. Both games were spearheaded by Shinji Mikami, and originally Resident Evil was designed to be a remake of Sweet Home which would now be able to make use of the Playstations processing power in order to bring elements of Sweet Home to life in ways prior hardware prevented.
Yet because Capcom ended up losing the rights to Sweet Home, the game needed to be rebranded, making the name change from Sweet and Home to Resident and Evil make so much more sense than the rather confusing title did when it dropped in Western markets back in the mid 90s.
