8 Bizarre Reasons Video Games Were Pulled From Sale

1. Atelier Marie: The Alchemist Of Salburg

GTA LIBERTY CITY STORIES
Koei Tecmo

Originally released in 1997 for the PlayStation 2, Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg might seem far too innocent a title to be banned for its content.

Which is true, for the PS2 release at least.

The game was ported to several systems after it released, including the Dreamcast in 2001. Unfortunately for Japanese players, who received an exclusive version of the game, the original print of the Dreamcast CD was infected with an extremely nasty virus.

This wouldn't have been a problem for most players, as the "Kris" virus that was present on the disc didn't affect Dreamcast systems directly. Instead, players who bought the Dreamcast version got a bonus if they inserted the disc into their PCs, in the form of an exclusive screensaver they could download.

However, doing this allowed the virus to install itself directly onto your PC.

The Kris virus was especially nasty, erasing both your BIOS and CMOS settings and forcibly overwriting files on your hard drive. Copies of the original release were swiftly recalled so new discs could be printed, with the true origin of the virus unknown to this day.
