8 Bold Predictions For PS4, Xbox One & Nintendo Switch In 2018

7. God Of War Is 2018's Horizon Zero Dawn

Something isn't lining up for God of War's reboot, and it's the same issue Horizon Zero Dawn had, both in development and post-launch: Yes, it'll sell well and we'll all marvel as to how solid it feels, but there's a lack of real passion to truly foster a fanbase.

It's a crying shame, don't get me wrong. Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the most immaculately well made video games of all time; a truly stunning mesh of narrative, thematics, character and game mechanics. But it's not The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In a way, it's not even Cuphead.

God of War only really caught on thanks to its exemplary control scheme and utilisation of quick-time events into set-piece combat. The former has been gutted as part of the soft reboot, and the latter is in there, but comes after no less than five sequels already did the exact same thing.

Factor in that Kratos was never anybody's favourite protagonist (the dude's defining trait is that he's angry... but without the soft humane centre that makes The Incredible Hulk work). God of War certainly shocked many when beardy Kratos walked out in that reveal, but from the annoying kid companion to a Naughty Dog narrative-aping overhaul, this is lining up to miss the mark.
