The Gears Of War franchise has always had a weird relationship with its shotgun weapons. Ever since they blasted apart the competition, fans have noted that both the Gnasher and the Double-Barrelled variant had inconsistent performance in both range and damage output.

In Gears Of War 3, online matches were plagued by players bum-rushing up to other fighters and blasting them apart at point-blank range, and while this is totally how a shotgun should work, when coupled with the games crouch run and ability to tank shots, meant that things quickly devolved into shotgun only matchups.

Things reached an absolute low though with Gears 5, which presented a Gnasher so utterly powerful, that many said it broke the online for a good old while. Here shells could take you down from range and with such force, it felt like it slapped you through the TV as well. Luckily things have calmed down somewhat since a big nerf to the weapon, but before this the question of "Shotgun or Sniper?" was answered by The Gnasher with "why not both?"
