8 Cancelled Video Game Movies That Would Have Changed Everything
2. God Of War
A movie based on Sony's ultra-bloody God of War series came close to happening in 2009 when Brett Ratner signed up to direct and a screenplay based on the first game landed on Universal's doorstep.
Kratos's adventures in Ancient Greece would lend themselves perfectly to the big screen, playing out like a gritty, unrelenting version of Clash of the Titans, except with more decapitations and disembowelling.
At Universal, it was all quiet on the God of War front for a while, but the project gained momentum a few years later when Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton were hired to rework the script.
The duo's revised script was said to be a prequel to the first game, following the adventures of a more human Kratos in the days before he became enthralled to Ares. This was the last official status update on the project and Ratner quietly made for the exit shortly afterwards.
Interestingly, subsequent games have explored some of the elements that were touted for the movie. God of War: Ascension served as a prequel to the mainline series and the upcoming PS4 instalment will introduce players to a more human Kratos.
Looks like the world doesn't need that movie after all.
