8 Characters You Didn't Realise Secretly Died In Their Own Video Games
6. Chell - Portal 2
Valve not being the kind of developer to hand the user everything on a platter, it’s far from outside reason to believe Chell doesn’t meet the seemingly peaceful end that’s portrayed in the final scene of Portal 2.
After “escaping” the Aperture Science facility that’s tormented out character for two games, we climb a long elevator and emerge in a clearing surrounded by wheat fields, like something that would hide an FBI bunker in 1970s film. Our protagonist remains silent as ever, with nothing but a Companion Cube by her side.
The symbology is what’s convinced many that this is in fact a motif for Chell’s death.
In Greek mythology, the afterlife is painted to be a cornfield (or the Elysian Fields, as they’re sometimes known), where you will be reunited with love ones.
The field of wheat checks out, and we have a certain cube with companion in its name, so that all checks out.
As for when Chell died, take your pick of battles with GLaDOS or any one of the countless turrets out for your blood throughout the game, but it seems only too plausible she met her end inside Aperture.
