8 Developers That Got Away With Selling You The Same Video Game Twice
8. Prototype 2 (Radical Entertainment)
Essentially the video game equivalent of teenage angst made real, the original Prototype was a glorious explosion of visceral melee fatalities, vehicle-jacking, body-stealing and superpowers. Coming alongside a tie-in comic of the same name, it really felt like Radical Entertainment had a winner on their hands.
Then Prototype 2 happened.
Embodying the "If it ain't broke..." mentality to a tee, Prototype 2 was almost literally the exact same game as before. The same powers, climbing animations, feel of control and array of abilities - playing James Heller felt like a de-hooded version of the original's Alex Mercer, albeit without the amnesiac "Who am I, really?" plot drive.
Ultimately you could still drive a few hundred tendril-skewers through entire city blocks of police and civilians at once - and Prototype 2 still moved at a steady clip - it was just a huge shame there wasn't anything else of real substance. Needless to say, Prototype 3 remains a huge missed opportunity.
