It can be tricky to know where to start with puzzle games, because what's easy for one player can be absolutely brain-busting for someone entirely new to the genre.

Accepting that, Valve's Portal games achieve perhaps the most impressive synthesis of ingenious mechanics with intuitive gameplay, such that even those entirely unacquainted with this type of game should have a great time.

Sure, the game's physics-based puzzles might prove mind-meltingly bewildering on occasion, but the difficulty level is expertly honed to be just challenging enough.

Beyond that, both games are accompanied by a brilliantly told story, lashings of witty humour, superb voice acting, and just a whole load of charm.

And of course, it gave the world arguably the greatest weapon in video game history - the crowned beauty that is the Portal Gun.

On top of all this, the games only last a few hours a-piece, and by the time you've played through both, you should be well-equipped to take on a bevy of trickier puzzle titles.
