8 Essential Video Games To Get You Into A New Genre

4. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - RPG

If there's a single RPG - that's role-playing game, for the uninitiated - which is accessible to the masses without feeling excessively dumbed down, it surely has to be Skyrim.

It's a game that doesn't overwhelm the player with complex systems and mechanics, while offering up simple combat and a linear quest line should you so wish, albeit ensconced within a lush open world that begs to be explored.

It's basically as foolproof as starter RPGs get - the game won't let you make any catastrophic mistakes which stall story progress and it won't ever overwhelm you.

But all the same, it's still an extremely polished and richly crafted experience that lets you roam as much or as little as you like.

If its broad appeal needed any greater endorsement, one of Skyrim's most famous players is the so-called "Skyrim Grandma", Shirley Curry - an 88-year-old woman whose YouTube videos about Skyrim have earned her well over a million subscribers. You love to see it.
