8 First-Person Video Games That Changed Gaming Forever

7. GoldenEye 007

Wolfenstein 1
Rare

It's considered one of the greatest video games of all time and is most certainly a fond memory for everyone who experienced it on the Nintendo 64 back in 1997. Rare's GoldenEye 007 was a pioneering creation for the first person shooter genre and sort of an unexpected one as well. Video games based on movies aren't always successful, but GoldenEye proved that a blockbuster theme could be applied to a game and made into an entertaining interactive adventure.

Based on the 1995 James Bond film "GoldenEye," the Nintendo 64 game introduced a more realistic aesthetic to first person shooters. Before GoldenEye, first person shooters took the Doom-like approach to the genre: two dimensional character models in three dimensional spaces. But, GoldenEye showed us that we could be even more immersed in the game, beyond a first person perspective.

Additionally, GoldenEye showed the world that consoles were a great platform for the first person genre to expand into and we see the products of such a decision even today. A beautiful mix of stealth, action, multiplayer, and single player, GoldenEye revolutionized the first person shooter genre and it's still one of our favorites in the history of gaming.
