8 First-Person Video Games That Changed Gaming Forever
6. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Known as a game that transformed the horror genre from shoot and survive to hide, survive, and maintain your sanity, Amnesia: The Dark Descent showed us that you don't need an extremely technical game to create a great horror experience.
With a first person perspective, the game was able to truly immerse you in its world. It was YOU that was traversing through the dark halls of Castle Brennenburg, not just Daniel.
Amnesia's genius not only lays within the survival mechanics, but also with its atmosphere. Despite playing as Daniel and being driven by his motivations, you could feel your own heart pounding as Daniel witnessed something unsettling. You felt your blood pressure spike when you heard a monster from the far side of the hallway. You felt that sense of relief when you had solved a puzzle and gained Daniel's sanity back.
Daniel grinding his teeth and hyperventilating was more of a reflection of the player's mood when they played the game, rather than Daniel himself. Because of the creepy atmosphere, startling noises, and chilling imagery mixed with the first person camera, Amnesia has since cemented itself into our minds as an example of a perfect horror experience.
