8 First-Person Video Games That Changed Gaming Forever

4. Portal

Wolfenstein 1
Valve

It's no real surprise that Valve defined the first person puzzle genre with the release of Portal in 2007. It was something that none of us had ever seen before - a cleverly crafted 3D puzzle game that allowed the player to be part of the solution to the puzzle.

The first person perspective of Portal gave the player a sense of independence and authority despite just being a test subject. No longer did the player only have to solve the puzzle with the tools placed in front of them, Portal allowed us to change the environment and interact with the puzzle with a way that was never seen.

The beauty and charm of Portal came in its ability to present the player with a puzzle scenario where they weren't completely bound by the physical objects around them. Using their own body (and a really cool Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device) the player descended into the depths of Aperture to confront the maniacal yet lovable GLaDOS.

There's no denying that the first person camera added to the unforgettable journey and ensured that Portal lived on in our hearts as one of the best video games of all time.
