Last Release - Wipeout 2048 (2012)

Speaking of Wipeout, this month has seen the release of the Omega Collection. This is just a remake, however, combining Wipeout HD (itself a remake of Wipeouts Pulse and Pure) and Wipeout 2048, the last game that Studio Liverpool (Psygnosis' successor) developed before their closure in 2012.

All three of these titles were developed for handhelds, and there hasn't actually been a game originally released on a console since 2002's Wipeout Fusion.

The original Wipeout and its sequel 2097 were some of the first standouts on the original PlayStation, attracting gamers with their electronic soundtracks and futuristic takes on racing. Wip3out and Wipeout 64 built further on their success across two different consoles. It's not entirely clear why the series went dormant after Fusion, given that its reception was respectable, if not earth-shattering. Though, Nintendo's highly comparable F-Zero series has also been missing in action since 2004, seemingly sacrificed given the stratospheric ascension of the Mario Kart franchise.

Hopefully The Omega Collection will be the catalyst for the development of a new title at some point down the line. Newer racing properties that have focused on realism such as Driveclub and Project Cars have struggled to catch on, and perhaps a return to Wipeout's chaotic mayhem is exactly what the genre needs.
