Whilst they're responsible for several of the world's most popular gaming franchises, Electronic Arts (EA) are widely disliked across the gaming community for their propensity to buy up smaller studios and either amalgamate their creations into their own machine, or kill them off altogether.

Criterion's Burnout jostled for superiority with EA's Need For Speed series throughout the early noughties, with each bringing something different to the racing genre.

Two 'Underground' iterations of Need For Speed took inspiration from The Fast And The Furious to offer a street racing experience with extensive customisation, whilst the more arcade-orientated Burnout focused on vehicular destruction. This included the addition of a dedicated Crash mode in Burnout 2 and the ability to perform 'Takedowns' on other racers in Burnout 3. Both enhanced their respective experiences with excellent soundtracks,

EA took over Criterion soon afterwards, though the two franchises continued to coexist up to the release of Burnout Paradise on Playstation 3. A huge open world racing experience that was built upon with seemingly endless swathes of extra content, it still stands out almost a decade after its original release as a fine racing title. Never has it been followed, however, with Criterion shifted over to development of their once-rival series in 2010.

Perhaps Need For Speed had more name value, but never has it offered the ability to slam rivals into barricades at 200mph or do hundreds of millions of dollars in hypothetical damage by engineering a pile-up in slow motion...
