8 Gaming Easter Eggs You Won't Believe
5. Metal Gear Solid - Psycho Mantis Mind-Reading
This is definitely one of the better-known easter eggs on this list, but it's renowned for a reason. The Psycho Mantis boss fight in Metal Gear Solid is one of the most innovative player experiences in video game history. You're playing as a gritty, special-ops veteran trying to avert nuclear disaster, and all of a sudden, this sinister enemy starts talking about Suikoden and Castlevania. Psycho Mantis is apparently psychic, and when he "reads Snake's mind", he's actually checking the memory card in the PlayStation.
If he recognizes a game file, he'll mention it during the demonstration of his abilities. This experience was unheralded at the time, and you can almost always find Psycho Mantis on "Top Boss Fights" and the like.
4. Silent Hill 2 - The Dog Ending
One of the most bizarre, nonsensical sequences in the history of video games, Silent Hill 2's "Dog Ending" was something that was wholly unexpected by the gaming community. Basically, at the conclusion of the game, protagonist James Sunderland wanders into a control room and discovers a Shiba Inu operating the consoles. James deduces that the events in the game were the handiwork of this dog, Mira. He crumples to the ground as Mira starts licking his face as the dog-themed credits roll. The Japanese love including absurd easter eggs into otherwise dark and gritty games, and Silent Hill 2 is a perfect example of that.
