5. Sarah's Death - The Last Of Us

If years of playing games set in the post-apocalypse have taught us anything, its that the world can become a pretty inhospitable place, particularly for those not capable of fending for themselves.

So, once it becomes clear in the outset of The Last of Us that an outbreak of mutated humans is threatening to destroy humanity, it becomes increasingly clear that protagonist Joel is going to struggle to prevent his young daughter escaping the event safely.

The player is introduced to the catastrophic scenario right as the proverbial sh*t hits the fan, and it becomes increasingly clear that the chances of survival while holding on to a child while ravenous quasi-zombies roam the streets with a bloodlust are slim, to say the least.

However, even the most hardened veteran of these kinds of experiences will still likely not have been prepared for Sarah's death at the hands of a soldier just as it appears they have reached some kind of safety.

Sarah's whimpers as she takes her final breaths in her father's arms are legitimately traumatising, and while it's possible to rationalise that she likely wouldn't have survived anyway, it still doesn't make seeing this scene any easier.
