8 Gaming Moments Where You KNEW You Were Going To Cry

4. Aerith's Death - Final Fantasy VII

The benchmark of emotional moments in video games. Aerith's Death in Final Fantasy VII is so iconic that even 23 years after the game's initial release it is still one of the most raw and heartbreaking scenes of death ever depicted in pixels. Players were so distressed by the death that popular rumours spread following the release incorrectly stating that her passing was in any way preventable.

The player is completely powerless to save the flower girl who has been travelling with them after an emotional connection has been building up throughout the game to that point. When Cloud finally rendezvous with Aerith at an Altar under the Forgotten City, control is stripped from the player and they are forced to watch as Aerith is murdered in cold blood by the evil Sephiroth.

To make matters even more emotional, not only does the player have to witness their friend's passing, but they then have to watch as the party pays respects to their fallen companion, making the grief hit home that little bit harder.
