8 Genius Video Games That Caught You Being Unfaithful
4. Silent Hill 2
A masterfully designed game with a thoroughly subtle analysis of human behaviour and psychosis, Silent Hill 2 actually has multiple endings based on a number of things, but the one that's pertinent here is the 'Maria ending'.
The setup goes that one James Sunderland is attempting to track down his potentially still alive missing wife, Mary, who despite passing from illness three years prior, has just sent him a letter from the titular town. Along the way, he encounters the mysterious Maria; a woman with similar features to Mary who the game gives you many opportunities to get close to by coming to her aid, and/or repeatedly looking in on her when she's ill.
If the player does this and somewhat leaves Mary behind, the game inverts this potential 'happy ending' in a couple of brilliant ways. First, you have to take down a demonic version of Mary as the final boss, before the final exchange has Maria show signs of illness, hinting James' living situation will repeat, as leaving with her is not the 'true ending', after all.
