8 Gritty Reworks Of Video Game Characters That Fell Flat

For a revered video game franchise as Devil May Cry, you would think the developers would stay on course when releasing future entries.

DmC: Devil May Cry, although critically received in a positive way, faced the wrath of fans, particularly due to the unnecessary, grungy redesign of mainstay hero Dante. Instead of being light-hearted and relatively goofy, this new Dante was younger, but darker in personality. Gone are the days where he would use quips in exchanges, as he was now portrayed as more troubled and hunted by sinister forces.

Although he has some witty dialogue to note, it doesn't come off as special like the previous iteration of Dante. This is only reinforced with the game's attempt at a serious, real-world social commentary, which tries too hard in spite of the message being sent.

Dante's arc in the game is relatively uninspiring, as his brooding demeanour and cheesy penchant for swearing and drawing blood from his enemies often feels extremely forced.

The world-building ideas themselves could be more interesting, if we were only given a lead character who didn't dislike himself as much as we disliked him. Last year's Devil May Cry 5 was praised for being a course correct, both in terms of style and, more importantly, bringing back the Dante we all know and love.
