8 Gritty Reworks Of Video Game Characters That Fell Flat

2. Spyro - Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure

Although The Legend of Spyro reboot trilogy strayed away from the original source material, he still has nothing on 2011's Skylander's interpretation of the loveable dragon.

Spyro in this game looks to be one brazen change away from looking like he was part of 2007's Lair, which is not how you treat such an iconic character. The more grizzly appearance, coupled with the intimidating set of eyes and protruding claws, allowed the once kid-friendly dragon to become something apparently an adult audience wanted.

The Legend of Spyro trilogy also attempted to rework the titular hero into something more grounded in a realistic story. At least, in this respect, the games managed to capture the essence of what Spyro looked like, as well as his known personality traits of being strong-willed and protecting his friends. Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure missed this mark completely, in favour of an edgy reimagining that resulted in the character looking anything but.

It took until 2018's release of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy to firmly return Spyro to his former glory in the eyes of his most diehard fans. Hopefully, that old rumour of another dark and gritty Spyro game doesnt manifest into something possibly worse.
