8 Historical Eras Assassin's Creed Could Still Visit
4. China
Where does one even begin when it comes to exploring Chinese history? Whilst Odyssey’s Greece is considered the cradle of western civilisation, written records in China go as far back as 1250 BCE and supposed events can be dated back even further. Since then, there have been a myriad of dynasties, kingdoms, uprisings and conquests. There is probably enough source material across these to populate an entire series of games rather than just one.
Picking a period to focus a Chinese-set Assassins’ Creed game is therefore difficult. Chronicles: China opted for a setting between 1526 and 1567, ending with the real-life assassination of the Jiajing Emperor, but the fictional story of the Oriental brotherhood either side of this has not been explored.
The final stages of Mongol invasion in the late thirteenth century, led by Kublai Khan, could be a possibility. The global spread of the Mongol Empire could even take such a game beyond Chinese borders.
The tumultuous times of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms is another, given the amount of warfare involved. Otherwise, Confucius and the initial construction of the Great Wall in the Warring States period could be interesting to explore, taking the series even further back than Odyssey did.
The Chinese
government can be a little sensitive when it comes to depictions of their
history, but given its richness, it certainly should not go ignored.
