8 Iconic Video Game Franchises That Went Completely Off The Rails
5. Batman: Arkham
When we were gifted Arkham Asylum, it was hard to imagine that gaming could get much better. Not only was a truly superb rendition of Batman ours to control, but we could do everything the Dark Knight should be able to do in a very wide environment.
As a follow up, Arkham City took everything we’d adored and polished it until it sparkled. The world was bigger, the combat was better and the story was utterly magnificent – why the tale didn’t end there is a question that may never be answered.
Arkham Knight’s story wasn’t anywhere near as good as City’s, despite having a much bigger world to explore – it just felts like the developers expanded beyond their means – and the unbelievable blunder in revealing the titular character’s real identity before the game even hit shelves almost ruined everything the series had set up.
It’s tough to be cruel to a series that I, and many others, have gotten so much enjoyment from, but it is deserving of criticism. I only hope the next instalment is a return to form, and isn’t a step further down the rabbit hole of satisfying the fanboys whilst simultaneously flipping the rest of the market off.
