8 Massive Online Community Events That Changed Video Games

7. Destroying the Sleeper in Everquest

Everquest was one of the earliest MMOs to be released and as players first got to grips with new mechanics and systems. As with any title in the genre, there are a few gaps and glitches here and there. The next entry on the list stands as highly unexpected.

There was one foe in the game world that was said to be unkillable however. Kerafyrm the Sleeper, a formidable dragon with millions of hit points. Lurking in the Sleeper's Tomb, being able to venture in and find the beast for yourself was a one-time-only event across every server, which only heightened the mystique behind the beast.

Who brought down the monster? A collection of guilds in the Rallos Zek server. Clans on this IP address were known for their ruthless playstyles, eliminating players and allowing their bodies to looted by others. Rival groups came together when the awakening of Kerafrym was announced.

It would take more than three hours to knock the life points down, but the dragon would instead disappear, the developers having not accounted for players actually managing to kill it. SOE themselves would congratulate the players, having previously despawned the monster in fear of the game's story mode breaking. It remains a memorable moment in MMO history.
