That’s more than enough of utilising the actual systems of RPGs to break them by being too good, let’s dedicate this entry to a glitch that will instead totally screw you if you’re too good at the game.

Breaking a game because you nailed the perfect combat approach is one thing, but what if you’re playing a JRPG and you just really love grinding for levels? Usually that’d be a great thing. More levels, better stats, higher chance of success in combat.

Unless of course you’re playing 1995 Sega RPG Phantasy Star IV which had a peculiar glitch that would tank your characters stats if they passed level 99. It’s pretty unlikely you’d be able to achieve this but the few who did noticed that the developers had clearly subbed out a level cap for a glitch that would gradually level your characters down a level for every new number you would have hit over the cap of 99.

When it comes to a time sink RPG, or any RPG for that matter, this is really not what you want, but it is a prime example of being punished for playing perfectly.
