7. Mehrunes Dagon - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion's ultimate antagonist is the Daedric Prince of Destruction himself, Mehrunes Dagon, and given that he manifests in Tamriel as a gigantic demon with a whole heckton of health, players quite reasonably assume they'll get the opportunity to cut him down personally... somehow.
But no dice. When your Sean Bean-voiced pal Martin Septim quite rightly points out that Dagon's avatar is simply too big and powerful to fight the conventional way, he decides to sacrificially even the odds, merging himself with the spirit of Akatosh and becoming a Dragon-God avatar on equal footing with him.
At this point, all you can do is stand around and watch as Akatosh destroys Dagon in a matter of seconds, sending him back to Oblivion before Akatosh turns to stone and Martin ascends to the afterlife.
On paper it's a thrilling spectacle, but you can't really blame players for finding it all a tad undercooked given that they've got no active hand in it themselves - they're just a passive, thumb-twiddling spectator at this point.
That said, it's somewhat refreshing in retrospect that we as players weren't once again playing The Chosen One, but rather the guy who helps The Chosen One out.
