8 Most Brutally Violent Video Game Moments Of 2017 (So Far)

2. Dying During Childbirth In What Remains Of Edith Finch

Edith Finch
Giant Sparrow

Despite being about reliving the tragic deaths of an entire family - including that of a one-year-old baby - What Remains of Edith Finch is not a particularly bloody or violent game, but it certainly has one of the most harrowing and brutal death scenes of all time.

After witnessing the killings of a whole family thanks to an alleged family curse, the game hits you with one last emotional gut-punch as it forces you to watch the death of the playable protagonist, 17-year-old Edith, as she dies during childbirth.

However this isn't just a passive sequence or a cut-scene, but actually a gameplay section from the perspective of the baby itself being born and inadvertently killing its mother. You're given full control as you push forwards through the birthing canal, knowing full well that in doing so you're actually simultaneously killing Edith.

Without using even a speck of gore and instead opting to use game mechanics to freak you out, What Remains of Edith Finch was able to implicitly create one of the most disturbingly violent video game deaths of all time.
