8 Most Notorious Video Game Cash Grabs This Decade
5. Metal Gear: Survive
Other than a developer/publisher to be named later on this list, no other publisher has had quite the dip in public perception like Japanese giants Konami.
From the cancellation of Silent Hills and the very public falling out with Metal Gear creator and all-around creatively brilliant insane person Hideo Kojima, through to carbon copy versions of Pro Evolution Soccer and the focus on Pachinko and Slot machines over traditional gaming platforms, Konami has seemingly cashed in any creativity and goodwill in favour of cold hard cash. This can be personified in Metal Gear: Survive.
The first Metal Gear without Kojima could have been the opportunity to show the world that post-Kojima Metal Gear was going to be as strong as ever. What we received instead was a paper-thin tower defence game which heavily relied on MG5: The Phantom Pain art assets.
The game was also heavily monetised, from in-game currency to having to pay for additional save slots. Not only was Metal Gear: Survive and insult to the legacy of the franchise, but an insult to the players who stuck by Konami even after the years of poor treatment.
