8 Most Notorious Video Game Cash Grabs This Decade
4. Bundling Modern Warfare Remastered With Infinite Warfare
For many years, the Call of Duty franchise was coasting on the waves made by stellar previous instalments. The online PvP gameplay was always solid, but the indifferent storytelling mixed with a series direction being pushed further and further sci-fi made fans pine for the glory days, boots on the ground action without the bells and whistles. Players wanted Modern Warfare Remastered.
Players did get their wish but in the worst way possible. MW: Remastered was announced at the same time as the universally panned Infinite Warfare. The problem was, to access the game people wanted, you had to purchase a very expensive special edition of the game people didn't want.
Players could only buy MW: Remastered stand-alone nearly a whole year later, meaning the only way to get access to the game was via Infinite Warfare. Things were made even worse when Activision released a DLC map pack for MW: Remastered, containing maps found on the decade-old game, for more money than the original asking price ten years before.
Activision saw an opportunity to exploit their loyal fanbase, using the game they wanted to boost the sales of the flagging Infinite Warfare. Shameful behaviour.
