8 Most Underrated Video Games Of 2021 (So Far)
5. Oddworld: Soulstorm
One of the strangest PlayStation properties to receive a hardcore fanbase, a return to Oddworld has been anticipated since the release of the absolutely stellar remake, New 'N' Tasty, in 2014.
Follow up Soulstorm was set to be a much more ambitious project though. Rather than a straight up remake of next game in the series, Abe's Exoddus, this was going to reinvent it, re-imagining and changing the whole original rather than simply re-creating what was there previously in high fidelity.
Still, once again you're taking control of Mudokon Abe, moving through 2.5D stages in the pursuit of liberating others of your kind while avoiding getting drilled with bullets.
While it received a lot of pre-release hype, the reviews weren't overwhelmingly positive at launch. You can see why as well, as Soulstorm is very much a game indebted to 90s and early 2000s design, for better or worse.
That means you're going to come up against a lot of headaches that you haven't seen for a long time, including some pretty infuriating checkpointing that can suck the life out of certain sections as you try, try and try them again.
It's rougher than it should be, but Soulstorm is still charming, full of personality, and a fun platformer at heart. The stages themselves can be grand and visually impressive, and commanding the hapless Abe in the pursuit of revolution is always a worthy goal.
