7. The Plot Falls Apart In The Third Act - Mortal Kombat 1

Being the second reboot of Ed Boon's spine-ripping franchise, Mortal Kombat 1 had the opportunity to tell any story it desired, since it was no longer shacked by the established continuity.

For the most part, MK1 incorporates similar plot beats from the former timeline without repeating them. Certain kombatants have had their backstories and allegiance drastically changed, which keeps things fresh. With a brewing mystery developing from the very beginning, MK1 sets up an enthralling premise straight away.

Rather than continuing to tell a new story, the third act unravels everything, unnecessarily stitching itself to the last entry. Just to make things more jarring, the narrative of Mortal Kombat 11's DLC is also shoved in. As a result, anyone unfamiliar with MK11 Aftermath will be pretty lost after reaching MK1's climax.

As the plot continues to include aspects from previous instalments, it feels like the developers stuffed in fan-service for the sake of it. Not only is this lazy, it contradicts the reboot's purpose. How can MK1 start fresh if it keeps bringing up the mainstream series? Why can't the game just tell its own story?

Ironically, the last reboot, Mortal Kombat 9, dealt with this issue far better. Despite opening with the same premise as the 1992 classic, MK9 ultimately veers into a totally different direction. MK1, on the other hand, starts off completely different, and then bends over backwards to circle back to the original narrative.
