To list the things that this game does right would take an entire list all its own, and an even longer one to detail how it deconstructs player expectations, but for me, the standout feature of Disco Elysium is how it actually punishes you for sinking all your points into different aspects of your psyche.

With a tonne of different avenues to invest in, it can be tempting to buff up your detective in just a few areas in order to min/max your way to victory.

After all this style of play is rewarded in a tonne of other games so why should this be any different? Well simply put, if you put too many points into one area you'll end up breaking the experience by breaking your own brain!

If you become too dependant on one facet of your mind, that portion will begin wresting control from you, acting out without your input, overriding your choices, and yelling in your ear causing more subtle solutions to be lost in the mix.

Therefore, you can become worse at your job by sinking too many points into skills aimed at making you better.
