Sometimes an overlooked gimmick can actually be a game's main USP, such is the case of BPM: Bullets Per Minute, which sought to answer the question of "What would happen if you took the frantic action of DOOM and set it on a dance floor?"

The end result is one of the most cathartic and challenging experiences going, where the player can only shoot, reload and dodge on the beat and must contend with room after room of randomly designed dungeons each leading to a monstrous area boss which kicks things into high gear.

Tying the challenge to your own sense of ryhtm and then plastering a hefty dose of shooting combat on top is what makes BPM utterly unique, and it opens the door for what else might be done with this combination.

Maybe racing games that reward boosting on the beat? Fighting games that deal bonus damage when connecting on the chorus? It goes to show that it's not just the likes of Guitar Hero and Rock Band that hold the monopoly on music-centric gameplay.
