MicroLeague

Wrestling has come a long way since the steroid-fueled, cartoonish days of the 1980s. Wrestling video games have come just as far. For proof, one must look no further than 1987. With the advent of the Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection earlier in the decade, wrestling had become more mainstream than ever before. WWF megastars like Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage were now dominating television screens and magazine covers across the world. It was only natural that the WWF was looking emulate this success through other forms of media. They firmly planted their collective, size thirteen boots into the technological terra incognita that was personal home computers.

Released for various home computer systems in 1987, MicroLeague wrestling was the very first WWF video game in any capacity. If you expected this freshman video game release to combine the action oriented style of late 1980s arcade affairs with the larger than life personas that made the company a household name, you would be wrong. The characters are there. The action? Not so much.

MicroLeague was a turn-based strategy offering. A number of pre-set matches including Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan vs. Paul Orndorff were available for players to select from. On their turn, players would select a move or action for their character. If the selection was successful, a digitized image of their character performing the move would appear on screen. If you love wrestling and waiting for your turn, this game is for you.
