8 Popular Video Game Mechanics That Suddenly Disappeared

Deus Ex is one of the most beloved video games of all time for many reasons, and quite arguably the greatest immersive sim ever made.

One mechanic which it perhaps doesn't get enough credit for is its approach to body damage, whereby players have separate health values for each part of their body - the head, torso, left arm, right arm, left leg, and right leg.

While losing all the head or torso health will lead to death, players can have their limbs whittled down to 0 HP and suffer the consequences - hand damage reducing accuracy, while leg damage leaves players crawling around looking for a medkit.

It's a fascinating mechanic which forces the player to think outside the box compared to just about every other game out there.

While the Fallout franchise has also featured body part damage throughout the years, that's about it.

It adds such a fun and potentially hilarious element of strategy to play that it should definitely be more prevalent in games with a substantial survival element.
