With the recent leaks that indicate Microsoft want to buy EA, a lot of people have seen that as Microsoft throwing the company a lifeline. That simply isn't the case. There are undoubtedly a few other companies trying to buy EA, but that doesn't mean EA is in economic despair.
Revenue comes from a lot of different places, an EA will always have money. Just because one of their games undersells or flops, doesn't mean that they are mortally wounded. Any games publisher that could be completely destroyed by a single underselling product, isn't playing their cards right.
When it comes to EA, they will almost always have money. They are one of gaming's biggest names and have their hands in hundreds of cookie jars. And Microsoft trying to buy them out isn't indicative of their monetary value. It's Microsoft (a company that goes beyond gaming) trying to acquire a powerful brand.
