8 Reasons Even Hardcore Fans Are Giving Up On Assassin's Creed

3. We Need A Series Protagonist

Isn't it weird that a game so associated with the industry and so recognisable by almost anyone with the barest interest in media, doesn't have a main hero to call its own? It's reminiscent of Microsoft's montage video at E3 where they had to resort to a vaguely fantasy-inspired dude to essentially label as "The Fable guy!" without a real name. Before Desmond was taken out the equation, at least he provided some tangible element you could weave the other games around, but now the iconography of the series (a hooded figure and a blade coming from the hand) have surpassed that - which is all well and good, but it shouldn't be one or the other. The 'Ezio trilogy' of 2, Brotherhood and Revelations worked a treat because we all cared about the main character - not to mention his connection to Altair and the events that'd happened between games. Now, there's nothing and no one to get invested in, Ubi forever expediting the "Here's a new hero and BAM, now they're a master assassin" just to pick up where they left off. How about doing a stripped-back entry all about a modern day spy who needs a certain piece of information (about a murder, secret document, whatever) contained somewhere in the past, and must frequently use the Animus to find out, learning skills from the past to aid his future? At the end of the day it's just not fulfilling to treat a new character like some flash-in-the-pan celebrity, popping up with a whirlwind of PR and 'You must see this!'-style messaging, only for it all to be forgotten again a month after release.
