2. Incredible Protagonists
Rockstar has a reputation for creating some of the most colorful, diverse, and iconic protagonists in all of gaming. From mute Claude in GTA III, to Vice City's Tommy Vercetti, to Red Dead Redemption's family man John Marston, to even the new student at Bullworth Academy Boarding School, James "Jimmy" Hopkins. Over the past decade, Rockstar has put us in the shoes of many incredible heroes and anti-heroes. Unlike most franchises where you are the typical everyday guy thrown into ridiculous situations and suddenly told to do everything, Rockstar protagonists are always the lone wolf, usually doing whatever they can to "get out of the life of crime, and go straight." (Which almost always brings them much deeper into a life of crime.) Sure, the same story gets old after a while, however all of Rockstar's protagonists are so unique, it seems as if the whole "leaving the life of crime" story is all brand new. Who doesn't love Ray Liotta's portrayal of Tommy Vercetti in Vice City. San Andreas C.J. has a cult following, and every body hoping for a cameo appearance in GTA V. Everybody loved Niko Bellic's dry sense of humor. Who didn't love running around as Luis Lopez playing bodyguard to the flamboyant Gay Tony. How many other games have put you in the shoes of your former young trouble making self and sent you away to boarding school in the shoes of Jimmy Hopkins. And be honest, everybody had a little crush or man-crush on John Marston. That still isn't covering half of the great protagonists Rockstar have graced us with over the years. With their next game, Rockstar is attempting to bring us three protagonists. From the trailer, it seems Franklin is the typical "trying to escape the life of crime" character, while Michael seems to have beat the odds escaping the life of crime and reaching the top, but in true GTA fashion, somethings brought him back to his law-breaking ways. And Trevor...well I don't quite know what the story is with Trevor other than he looks to be absolutely insane...and that he is already my favorite character. I can't wait to see how Rockstar develops three characters simultaneously, but if the trailers are any indication they are going to be awesome, as is Rockstar tradition.
