8 Reasons Wolfenstein II Is Better Than Call Of Duty: WW2
6. It’s Actually Doing Something Different
Once you get past the admittedly very well presented conversations aboard your boat heading towards Normandy beach in COD, the actual taking of the dunes and requisite levels almost feels like a greatest hits of every major military shooter of the early 2000s.
You've got the arbitrary likes of being in a vehicle convoy as the one ahead gets blown up, scenes where someone is always yelling to "GET ME A MEDIC" - even a very Medal of Honor-esque stealth sequence where fortified papers are presented so you can infiltrate without causing a ruckus.
Such things are solid enough, but feel like ticking boxes on a "How To Make A WW2 Shooter" checklist.
Wolfenstein II punches a hole right through the very fabric of American society, setting up a world where the KKK have been appointed leaders of the South, before analysing white supremacism in relation to the fascist power granted by Nazi regime. We have Americans openly declaring their love of Naziism, late night talk shows where Kommandants are the "celebrity guest", classic music re-recorded with German vocals and parades celebrating the day America was dominated.
Take Man in the High Castle and route it through 1984 Orwellian grime, yet keep the rebellious punk spirit of Wolfenstein as a franchise. It's bleak and dirty like a pungent oil spill, but with combat that ignites like a tossed match causing a blazing, controllable inferno.
Best of all, it's something you haven't seen before.
