8 Recent Video Games That Utterly Messed With Your Mind
3. Phasmophobia
If there is any game in recent memory that has utterly messed with players' minds to the extent that they can't even trust what's right in front of them, it has to be Phasmophobia.
Now when someone describes this title as a "first-person indie horror game" your brain might completely switch off thanks to the sheer deluge of games in this genre, but you shouldn't sleep on this game (and likely be unable to after playing it thanks to its utterly terrifying nature). Where Phasmophobia differs from other low budget shock n shlock titles is that it's an experience that is at once meticulous and indeed very personal.
As a team of paranormal researchers, it's your job to investigate spooky sites and track down ghosts with different scientific instruments. Using cameras, radios, thermometers, and the like you'll explore every inch of the map testing and checking notes with your team.
However it's here that the game completely messes with you by having spirits appear to one player and not others, whispers infest the headset of some of your team and not others, and of course by cutting off all electronics so that you have to speak out aloud in the game world rather than over the radio.
This, coupled with a mad dash to try and find a safe space to hide in, results in some of the most tense and horrifying moments in recent memory and is likely to live rent-free in your mind for months to come.
